Challenge and Change

Riverland Council has recently become the recipient of the Challenge and Change Grant committed to teaching leadership skills to girls in rural communities through social entrepreneurship. The nation-wide program is funded by the USDA and was implemented in 22 councils and 16 states last year.  This is Wisconsin's first year to participate in the program!   Riverland Council's 2008 grant program is directed toward girls ages 14-17 in Viroqua and Arcadia.  This is an exciting opportunity for girls and volunteers alike!  It includes an all expenses paid leadership retreat at Camp Ehawee where girls will learn how to identify a need in their community and build a sustainable business to address that need.  The program is girl driven, so projects will reflect only what the girls themselves decide they are passionate about.  As participants in the program, girls will learn lifelong lessons in leadership, business and finance skills, community relations, and social justice.  Volunteers will have the opportunity to be community champions for the girls - helping them identify what needs they want to address and working with them to get their business off the ground.  Strong male and female role models are also needed to help with training at the leadership retreat at Camp Ehawee during June 24-27, 2008.  If you're interested in volunteering, or know someone who would be, please contact Rachel Nelson at 1-800-787-2688 x305 or Rachel-Nelson@centurytel.net.  We are looking for entrepreneurs, business leaders, community advocates, and anyone who wants to be a positive role model for today's youth.
